How Candidates Reach the Watchlist
Two Paths, One Standard
There are two ways a practitioner can be considered for the Workflow Watchlist 25:
1. Nomination. Anyone can nominate a practitioner they believe belongs on the list — a colleague, a client, a consultant, or themselves. Self-nominations are welcome and carry no penalty; the best workflow practitioners are often the last people anyone thinks to put forward. Nominations are open through September 18.
2. Identification. The Work Management Institute and members of the Review Council also research the field directly and add candidates to the pool. The strongest practitioners in this discipline are often heads-down in the work, not campaigning for recognition — waiting for them to be nominated would guarantee we miss them. No nomination is required to be considered, and no candidate is disadvantaged for not having one.
However a candidate enters the pool, the evaluation is identical: the same category criteria, reviewed by the same Council, under the same rules.
How Evaluation Works for Identified Candidates
Candidates who enter through nomination tell us about their work directly. Candidates identified through research don't get that chance by default — so the process accounts for it:
-
Identified candidates are evaluated against the published category criteria using publicly verifiable evidence — their published work, systems they've built, roles they've held, and contributions visible to the field.
-
If something material to the evaluation can't be verified publicly, we contact the candidate directly before final selection rather than guessing or scoring the gap against them.
-
Being contacted is not a guarantee of selection, and declining to respond simply means the evaluation proceeds on the public record alone.
What Never Changes
No fees — not to nominate, not to be considered, not to be honored. No path onto the list can be purchased, and no relationship with the Institute or its partners affects the outcome. Honorees are selected by the Review Council, whose membership and rules are published in full.
